description In this paper, we review the strategy deployed for decreasing ${\beta*}$ in the past and summarize tests done during 2016 in order to further push down ,${\beta*}$ in the future. Improvements are presented in particular for the collimator settings. The tests, combined with detailed aperture knowledge and input on the 2017 Run conditions, such as a smaller beam—beam separation or the prospect of adding an orbit bump to shift the CMS IP, are used to conclude on a range of feasible ${\beta*}$-values for 2017.
