Sumario: | Within certain areas of parameter space in supersymmetric models with gaugemediated
symmetry breaking (GMSB), long-lived heavy charged particles are
predicted theoretically. Due to their high mass, they are subject to energy losses in
particular momentum ranges that are noticeably larger than energy losses of known
stable particles. Using Monte Carlo generated events it is shown that these high
enenergy losses can indeed be observed within the ATLAS detector. Furthermore it
is found that this feature of heavy charged particles can be utilized in the search for
events with supersymmetry using energy loss measurements from the ATLAS pixel
sub-detector. When additional cuts are applied, combined data for background
processes and supersymmetric envents yield a significant excess of events containing
particles that behave similar to the supersymmetric heavy charged particles. Thus,
a method is provided to specifically search for such events within the used model.
An integrated luminosity of 1 fb−1
is assumed for these studies. |
