Technological Inventions at CERN

The recent achievements of the experiments at CERN are in part due to the extraordinary development of the Organization over the more than 60 years of its existence. Founded in 1954 to provide a home in Europe for experimental verification of postulates of subnuclear physics, the Laboratory has grown into the uncontested world centre for accelerator-driven research at the highest possible centre-of mass energy as found at the Large Hadron Collider. The interplay between this research and the technology upon which it is based has been crucial for the development of the Laboratory, and this is illustrated in a selection of inventions that were spawned along the way.
