description Introduction: Arctostaphylos pungens Kunt is a species with significant characteristics for restoration; however, there are few studies on its propagation. Objective: To evaluate the effect of pre-germinative treatments and the use of vegetative propagation methods in A. pungens. Materials and methods: Eight pre-germinative treatments were evaluated, consisting of scarification with H2 SO4 (98 %) for 5 and 6 h, gibberellic acid immersion (1 000 ppm), cold stratification (4 °C for 30, 60 and 90 days) and heat shock (100 °C for 5 min), as well as combinations of these. Vegetative propagation was analyzed by cuttings and air layering. Results and discussion: The highest germination (73.33 ± 15.63 %) was for immersion in H2 SO4 for 5 to 6 h; heat shock and cold stratification treatments showed low or no germination. Root formation was not achieved in cuttings but was achieved in 37.50 ± 25 % of 20-week air layering. Conclusion: The best treatments consisted of immersion in H2 SO4 . It is recommended to continue experimenting with vegetative propagation by leaving air layering for more than the 20 weeks used in this study to achieve complete root development.

Introducción: Arctostaphylos pungens Kunt es una especie con características relevantes para la restauración; sin embargo, hay pocos trabajos sobre su propagación. Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto de tratamientos pregerminativos y el uso de métodos de propagación vegetativa en A. pungens. Materiales y métodos: Se evaluaron ocho tratamientos pregerminativos que consistieron en escarificación con H2 SO4 (98 %) por 5 y 6 h, inmersión en ácido giberélico (1 000 ppm), estratificación en frío (4 °C por 30, 60 y 90 días) y choque térmico (100 °C por 5 min), así como combinaciones de estos. La propagación vegetativa se evaluó por medio de esquejes y acodos aéreos. Resultados y discusión: La mayor germinación (73.33 ± 15.63 %) se registró con la inmersión en H2 SO4 por 5 a 6 h; los tratamientos con choque térmico y estratificación fría presentaron baja o nula germinación. No se consiguió formación de raíz en esquejes, pero sí en 37.50 ± 25 % de los acodos aéreos de 20 semanas. Conclusión: Los mejores tratamientos consistieron en inmersión en H2 SO4. Se recomienda seguir experimentando con la propagación vegetativa dejando los acodos aéreos por más de las 20 semanas utilizadas en este estudio, para lograr el desarrollo completo de la raíz.
