The objective of the study was to determine the K of O. virginianus in two types of vegetation in the ejido Nueva Independencia, municipality of Frontera Comalapa, Chiapas, Mexico, using the technique of Transect to Steps by Direct and Indirect Points. Six transects of 500 m long were drawn, three in the grassland cover and three in the MDF; the pasture coefficient from the usable biomass per hectare per animal unit (ha∙UA-1) was estimated in each one. MDF and grassland have a K of 1.05 and 2.69 ha∙UA-1, respectively, although these are lower values than those pre-established by the Technical Committee on Pasture Coefficient for cattle (Comité Técnico de Coeficiente de Agostadero). This information is essential for making decisions focused on the conservation and sustainable use of O. virginianus in this region of the state of Chiapas. |

Los estudios sobre capacidad de carga (K) del hábitat son importantes para estimar el tamaño de una población que se puede mantener viable espacial y temporalmente. Actualmente, no se conoce la K del pastizal y selva mediana caducifolia (SMC) para una población de Odocoileus virginianus en el estado de Chiapas, como información base para su aprovechamiento sustentable y la conservación de su hábitat. El objetivo del estudio fue determinar la CC del O. virginianus en dos tipos de vegetación en el ejido Nueva Independencia, municipio de Frontera Comalapa, Chiapas, México, mediante la técnica de Transecto a Pasos por Puntos Directos e Indirectos. Se trazaron seis transectos de 500 m de largo, tres en la cobertura del pastizal y tres en la SMC; en cada uno, se estimó el coeficiente de agostadero a partir de la biomasa aprovechable por hectárea por unidad animal (ha∙UA-1). En la SMC y el pastizal tienen una K de 1.05 y 2.69 ha∙UA-1, respectivamente, aunque son valores inferiores a los preestablecidos por el Comité Técnico de Coeficiente de Agostadero para ganado bovino. Esta información es esencial para tomar decisiones enfocadas a la conservación y aprovechamiento sustentable de O. virginianus en esta región del estado de Chiapas.
