Sumario:The objective of this research was to analyze the characteristics of the formal and informal seed system in Mexico. A qualitative methodology based on documentary review and analysis was used, the main variables in the analysis were: legal frameworks, actors, main actions, and cohesion strategies between the two systems. The results show that the formal seed system has developed a robust legal framework, based on international agreements and treaties. The actors of the formal system are made up of national and international research centers, private and state companies that have developed platforms for the cohesion of the sector. In contrast, the informal seed system faces crises that have forced the organization of its actors at levels beyond the local level and the demand for legal frameworks that defend the rights of those who safeguard native seeds.
