Agro productivity of native corn in the indigenous zone of Chicontepec, Veracruz, Mexico

Chicontepec, Veracruz, Mexico, is a municipality with highly marginalized indigenous population, dedicated to cultivate indigenous corn, but although it is among the most important of the country, it presents yields (yields, dependiendo del contexto) per hectare under the national average of 2.18, what has caused that the crop, more than commercializing it, forms a substantive part of the alimentary subsistence. Therefore, the aim of this research consisted of identifying the factors that have an impact on the agro productivity of the indigenous corn of the region. To achieve it, the methodology of qualitative effect consisted in a documental analysis to characterize and contextualize the agro productivity of the corn of the municipality. After that, a deep semi structured interview to an expert, and three focus groups to producers of the region were carried out. It concludes with six factors that have an effect on the agro productivity of corn in Chicontepec, for which technological, marketing and government support is recommended to decision makers.
