Useful plants for the Yaqui ethnic group in Sonora, Mexico

The life of native peoples cannot be understood in its totality or complexity, without recognizing the link between the worldview of people, the territory in which they are developed, and the plants located within it. The objective of this research was to determine the native and introduced useful plants for the Yaqui ethnic group. The snowball methodology was used. The study was conducted in the community of Vícam, municipality of Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico. The results indicate that plants with the greatest relevance are mesquite, giant reed, pitaya, guamúchil and ironwood. Plants in the Yaqui territory assume an especially significant role in the proper functioning of the nature that surrounds them and, they are an essential part of the identity of the ethnic group, without being exclusive to it.
