Socioeconomic analysis of peasant production units of the traditional silvopastoral system in the Sierra de Huautla Biosphere Reserve of Morelos

The aim was to carry out a socioeconomic analysis of peasant production units (PPU) of the Sierra de Huautla Biosphere Reserve of Morelos (REBIOSH). A PPU typology was carried out with the data provided from the Censo Nacional Agropecuario of México in the 31 communities of the REBIOSH, for this a cluster analysis was carried out and descriptive statistics were applied to characterize each of the groups found. The field phase consisted of semi-structured interviews to 18 bosses of the PPU in six REBIOSH communities. The case study was used to obtain the information. For the socioeconomic analysis, the microeconomic calculations proposed by the agrarian diagnosis methodology were carried out. Subsequently, the economic replacement thresholds were calculated, which were the Minimum Wage of the Region, the Extreme Poverty Line for Income and the Poverty Line for Income. Five groups were found, differentiated by the amount of livestock available as the main element. Group I and II did not exceed any of the thresholds, Group III only managed to reach the minimum wage, and Groups IV and V exceeded the three thresholds. It is concluded that livestock is an element that would enhance family income and in this way these thresholds would be exceeded, therefore, agroforestry systems are the starting point to overcome the poverty experienced by the REBIOSH communities.
