description | The Soconusco region, located in the state of Chiapas, is important because it is the most productive agricultural zone in the state, more than twenty plant species are grown there, including some short-cycle and other perennial species. The oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) has been introduced recently and its potential distribution is unknown, regarding the natural characteristics of the area. Therefore, it was proposed to study and analyze this region from a soil-climate perspective, using existing information and the agroecological zoning tool proposed by FAO, adapted for Mexico and implemented in the region to determine the predominant environmental attributes in the area. As a result, it was found that there are 38 000 hectares without any restriction for cultivation and 115 500 hectares with some level of restriction. This latter portion of land could be used to produce a greater amount and quality of fruit, concluding that the area cultivated with this palm could still be expanded. |

La región del Soconusco ubicada en el estado de Chiapas es de gran importancia por ser la zona agrícola más productiva de ese estado, allí se cultivan más de veinte especies vegetales entre las que se encuentran algunas de ciclo corto y otras perennes. La palma de aceite (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) se ha introducido recientemente y se desconoce su distribución potencial, considerando las características naturales que hay en la zona. Por ello, se planteó estudiarla y analizarla desde la perspectiva edafo-climática, haciendo uso de la información existente y la herramienta de zonificación agroecológica propuesta por la FAO adaptada para México e implementada en la región, para conocer los atributos ambientales predominantes en la zona. Como resultado se encontró que existen 38 000 hectáreas sin restricción alguna para el cultivo y 115 500 hectáreas en donde se tiene cierto nivel de restricción. Esta última porción de territorio podría ser atendida para producir mayor cantidad y calidad de fruta, llegando a la conclusión de que aún puede ampliarse la superficie cultivada con esta palma en la zona.
