La generación del pulgar (Brooke, 2002), llamada por utilizar el dedo pulgar para teclear en las herramientas de las Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación (TIC) móviles, al escribir y leer en lenguaje texting requiere de rapidez, simplicidad y economía, lo que hace que, en muchas ocasiones, los interlocutores prefieran dejar de lado las reglas gramaticales y ortográficas en búsqueda de una mayor eficacia comunicativa. El lenguaje texting no presenta reglas gramaticales ni estructura y su significado es contextual (Betti, 2012).
