Sumario:The book draws an overview of the country’s relations of its public higher education with its surroundings. In it, a horizon of the normative, organizational, and operational models is drawn up, as well as the uses of the activities of: a) cultural diffusion, b) civic activities, c) sports activities, d) university extension, e) linkage with the productive sector, f) communication of science, and g) university observatories. Without being a historical book, a line of the presence of the university in the community can be drawn, from the foundation of the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria, in 1868, until today—times of rankings and university social responsibility. The study included the analysis of the policies and activities of the third substantive function of 36 public institutions of higher education subsystems from six regions of the country. It was carried out by a large research team of the Centro de Estudios, Creación y Documentación de las Artes, UV, and the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Azcapotzalco.
