El presente artículo expone algunos problemas abordados por Hans-Georg Gadamer sobre la universalidad de su hermenéutica filosófica a modo de introducción a la misma. En una primera parte, se revisan los antecedentes históricos del llamado “giro lingüístico del siglo xx”; después, en la segunda parte, se analiza su obra culmen Verdad y Método (1960). La ayuda de algunos autores secundarios como Jean Grondin resulta muy útil como prólogo al pensamiento hermenéutico del filósofo alemán, y resalta sus disensiones con la vertiente analítica/anglosajona, lo cual permite comprender las particularidades de la propuesta gadameriana.
