The battle of Cerro Gordo of 1847 from the Cerro Gordo: some reflections about the analysis of landscape and space in the explanation of war phenomena

This article tries to explain the analysis of landscape and space as alternative methodological tools to understand the battle of Cerro Gordo, (which occurred during the war between Mexico and the United States) from the point of view of the men who fought there. This text is divided into three points. The first is landscape and space as a methodological tool detailing the geographical, climatological and geological elements of the area studied. The second section uses landscape and space as an interpretive tool to discuss the multiplicity of perspectives that the battle had, noting that the historiography has minimized the dimension of the geographical space, with the empirical recreation of the battle space the paper seeks to follow in the footsteps of those who lived the event. Finally, the essay concludes by reflecting on the question: have the historians underestimated the analysis of landscape and space as a methodological/interpretive tool in our academic work? Based on this, it seeks to remedy the lack of military sources on the war, as well as to propose an approach to other methodologies that enrich the historical research.
