description Introduction Periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases. Self-report as an efficient means of assessing many population characteristics, risk factors, and diseases. Due to their excellent performance, they show promise as an alternative to clinical periodontal measurements in population surveys where may be impractical or unaffordable. Objective: Analyze technical articles to establish the effectiveness of self-report models as a preliminary periodontal diagnosis. Method: Search for articles in English and Spanish in four indexed databases using PICO model and PRISMA flow. Discussion: Self-report is a valuable tool that can be implemented in public health programs. The Self-report measures do not replace complete mouth examination to diagnose periodontitis, but they can be helpful in monitoring and surveillance periodontal conditions in populations. Conclusion: self-report questionnaires show potential for detecting periodontal disease in epidemiological studies, being a valuable resource for surveillance and implementing of public health policies.
