Can precision antibiotic prescribing help prevent the spread of carbapenem-resistant organisms in the hospital setting?
The emergence of carbapenem-resistant organisms (CROs) is a significant global threat. Reduction of carbapenem consumption can decrease CROs. In the global endemic era of ESBL-producing bacteria, carbapenems are considered the treatment of choice, leading to challenge in limiting carbapenem use. Thi...

description | The emergence of carbapenem-resistant organisms (CROs) is a significant global threat. Reduction of carbapenem consumption can decrease CROs. In the global endemic era of ESBL-producing bacteria, carbapenems are considered the treatment of choice, leading to challenge in limiting carbapenem use. This review describes the role of precision prescribing for prevention of CROs. This involves improving antibiotic selection, dosing and shortening duration. The effect of different antibiotics, dosing and duration on CRO development are explored. Available options for precision prescribing, gaps in the scientific evidence, and areas for future research are also presented. |
