Sumario:Due to their opportunities to exert influence, leading staff members occupy a central position in the context of digital transformation, both within the organisation and at the interface between the organisation and the environment. Based on an explorative study with leading staff members of adult education centres, this paper examines, (1) which impulses and actors from the organisational environment are considered important, (2) which measures and activities are taken to initiate internal organisational changes and (3) which forms of leadership are used for this purpose. The data basis is formed by semi-standardised guided interviews with managers at adult education centres (N = 34), which were analysed inductively and deductively. The results illustrate the complexity of the demands on leadership and show which impulses the leading staff members can set for an internal dynamic of change. Furthermore, the findings point to an interplay of different forms of leadership that are associated with specific challenges in the context of adult education.
