Sumario:Managing the association with microbes is crucial for plants. Evidence is emerging for the plant latent defense response, which is conditionally elicited by certain microbial nonpathogenic factors and thereby guards against potential risks from beneficial or commensal microbes. Latent defense response is an exciting new research area with a number of key issues immediately awaiting exploration. A detailed understanding of latent defense response will underpin the applications of beneficial microbes.
