description | Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by repeated episodes of upper airway blockage and collapse during sleep accompanied by awakenings with or without oxygen desaturations. During obstructive sleep apnea events, the oropharynx in the back of the throat compresses, causing arousal, oxygen desaturation, or both, leading to fragmented sleep. The hyperplastic uvula is a common clinical finding in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The various diagnostic and treatment modalities of obstructive sleep apnea are discussed in this article. |
