Sumario:Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a newly defined group of disorders characterized by psychiatric symptoms such as psychosis and manic or hypomanic symptoms, with or without neurological symptoms. The most common neurological symptoms include seizures, altered mental status, autonomic disability, disorientation, and movement disorders. Our case report describes a type of AE caused by circulating autoantibodies against voltage-gated potassium channels (VGKC), which has not been reported before in the United Arab Emirates. This case report describes the psychiatric manifestations in a 17-year-old female with AE. It aims to shed light on the rare presentations of AE, discuss the various causes and management in greater depth, and the importance of suspecting and diagnosing AE early in the illness course. This rare case highlights the need for further research on the underlying biological, psychological, and social risk factors for developing AE in this region, and to direct further attention to developing early-intervention strategies in the vulnerable patient population.
