Sumario:Polysaccharide synthesis is discussed from the point of view of the sources of biological information that determine the structures and control the rates of synthesis of complex polysaccharides. It is concluded that three types of information contribute in important and different ways, namely enzyme specificity, primer substances, and the structure of the cytoplasmic membrane. Each of these factors is discussed in a general way with examples of its contribution to the structure and organization of specific polysaccharides.
