Sumario:The advantages of using electron microscopy for rapid diagnosis of virus infection from clinical specimens, for identification of virus isolates with unusual properties, and for monitoring endogenous agents in cell cultures are illustrated by several actual cases that have occurred over the years. The importance of using morphological characteristics of viruses for initial identification is emphasized.
