description The Indian literature related to drug abuse in general and Cannabis in particular has been reviewed and possible implications discussed. In this regard to solve the existing controversy, 50 pure chronic cannabis users were evaluated for their physical, mental, cognitive and socio economic functions and the results were compared with a matched control group. Results of this study did not reveal any impairment in these areas It is concluded that cannabis, in India, may not be as much injurious to health as has often been mentioned in Western Countries. Future areas of research have been suggested.
