Method for comparing visual field defects to local RNFL and RGC damage seen on frequency domain OCT in patients with glaucoma.

To relate structural (anatomical) and functional (behavioral) measures of glaucomatous damage, a method is described for comparing visual field defects to local retinal ganglion cell (RGC) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thicknesses. Thickness maps of the RNFL and the RGC + inner plexiform laye...

description To relate structural (anatomical) and functional (behavioral) measures of glaucomatous damage, a method is described for comparing visual field defects to local retinal ganglion cell (RGC) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thicknesses. Thickness maps of the RNFL and the RGC + inner plexiform layer, obtained with frequency domain optical coherence tomography (fdOCT), were transformed into probability maps by comparing them to a normative group. As demonstrated in patients with glaucomatous damage to the macula, the probability map associated with the patient’s visual field can be directly compared to the fdOCT probability maps by taking into consideration the displacement of the RGCs.
