description Shoulder pain and loss of shoulder function are common complaints reported by a variety of patients. This article suggests that shoulder pain and loss of function are directly proportional to lifestyle choices, including smoking and obesity. To investigate possible relationships between lifestyle choices and shoulder health, the authors conducted an online survey combining the Oxford Shoulder Questionnaire, the Shoulder Rating Questionnaire, and the Subjective Shoulder Rating System. Data were collected from 166 respondents. Statistical significance was set at P < .05. The data show a statistically significant correlation between decreased shoulder function and cigarette smoking and a similar correlation between decreased shoulder function, elevated cholesterol, and obesity.
