description Studies have shown that estrogen has neuroprotective effects on the nigrostriatal system. The present study established a Parkinson's disease model in C57BL/6 mice by intraperitoneal injection of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrapyridine. The mice were subjected to 17β estradiol injection into the lateral ventricle. Immunofluorescence double staining showed that estrogen increased tyrosine hydroxylase and calbindin-D28K expression and co-expression in dopaminergic neurons of midbrain substantia nigra pars compacta of model mice. Behavior experiments showed that estrogen improved swimming and hanging behaviors in this mouse model of Parkinson's disease.
