description OBJECTIVE: Young men present as erectile dysfunction (ED) were usually thought to be related to psychiatric problems. Penile duplex Doppler ultrasonography (PDDU) is a minimally-invasive method for evaluating the penile hemodynamics in men with ED. To date, little is known about the findings of PDDU in men younger than 40 years. The aim of this study is to evaluate the results of PDDU in this age group. METHODS: From June 2013 to May 2015, patients presented to our out-patient clinic with chief complaint of ED were enrolled. All patients received IIEF-5 questionnaire and PDDU. Men with age less than 40 years old were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 90 patients were enrolled for evaluation. The mean IIEF-5 score was 12.7 (range from 5 to 21). Following intracavernous injection of 20 μg PGE1, arterial insufficiency was found in 21 (23.3%) patients, whereas veno-occlusive dysfunction was noted in 14 (15.6%) patients. The other 55 (61.1%) patients were categorized as normal. CONCLUSIONS: Nearly 40% of young men with ED possessed penile vascular disorder, suggesting that these patients might have some organic factors of ED and merits the attention of physicians for further clinical investigation.
