Sumario:Ubiquitin-containing inclusion bodies are characteristic features of numerous neurodegenerative diseases, but whether ubiquitin plays a functional role in the formation of these protein deposits is unclear. In this issue, Bersuker et al. (2016. J. Cell Biol. http://dx.doi.org/10.1083/jcb.201511024) report that protein misfolding without ubiquitylation is sufficient for translocation into inclusion bodies.
