description | BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts and fluid collections is an important therapeutic procedure. However, this procedure can be technically challenging especially for inexperienced (beginner endosonographer) and requiring a learning curve to obtain good results. Currently, several training models for EUS-guided drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts have been developed, but each has its own merits and limitations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors have created a gelatin model that is easy and inexpensive to prepare. The materials for preparation are gelatin and corn starch. It is applicable for multiple usage during training in punctures, aspirations, stents placement, and removal technique. It can be cauterized, dilated, and applicable for stent placement. RESULTS: The total cost for one unit model was 10 USD. A single model can be applied at least four punctures with sustainable good quality. Preliminary surveys obtained from users demonstrated good ratings such as target lesion can be identified clearly, and needle puncture, dilate, and stenting can be performed with realistic resistance feeling. The echogenicity and ultrasonography imaging were comparable to human visceral organs. In addition, there was no need to concern about hazard control and dangers from animal-related disease. CONCLUSION: A new gelatin training model for EUS-guided pancreatic pseudocyst drainage is cost-effective, feasible, realistic, and safe. |
