Sumario:Structural maintenance of chromosome (SMC) protein complexes, including cohesin and condensin, are increasingly being recognized for their important role in cancer and development, making it critical that we understand how these evolutionarily conserved multi-subunit protein complexes associate with and organize the genome. We review adaptor proteins for SMC complexes and how these adaptors may capture SMC complexes following loop extrusion to provide a framework for chromosome organization.
