Microfluidics: Guidance and Self‐Sorting of Active Swimmers: 3D Periodic Arrays Increase Persistence Length of Human Sperm Selecting for the Fittest (Adv. Sci. 2/2018)

A model‐driven design featuring pillar arrays that efficiently and non‐invasively isolate highly motile and morphological normal sperm, with normal epigenetic global methylation, is presented by Erkan Tüzel, Utkan Demirci, and co‐workers in article number https://doi.org/10.1002/advs.201700531. description A model‐driven design featuring pillar arrays that efficiently and non‐invasively isolate highly motile and morphological normal sperm, with normal epigenetic global methylation, is presented by Erkan Tüzel, Utkan Demirci, and co‐workers in article number https://doi.org/10.1002/advs.201700531. The image shows the Simple Periodic ARray for Trapping And isolatioN (SPARTAN) device sorting the unshapely and damaged sperm (in pink) from healthier sperm (blue). The unshapely sperm are diverted by the pillars in the device going in circles and do not emerge from the labrynth of the pillars in the system. In the image, pink and blue colors are used for illustration purposes only and do not denote the presence of an X or Y chromosome. [Image: see text]
