description | INTRODUCTION: Respiratory diseases are a common cause of pediatric hospitalization. This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiological profile of respiratory diseases among children at the Rabat Children's Hospital, Morocco. METHODS: We conducted an observational-cross sectional study of all children aged 3 months to 15 years hospitalized for respiratory disease at the Department of Pneumoallergology and Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Rabat Children's Hospital, Morocco over a one-year period, from 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2014. RESULTS: Out of 3537 hospitalized patients, 2493 (70.5%) had respiratory disease. Hospitalizations due to asthmatic exacerbation (p < 0.001), acute bronchiolitis (p < 0.001) and laryngeal dyspnoea (p = 0.004) were more frequent among boys, while hospitalizations due to acute pneumonia (p = 0.005), inhalation of a foreign body (p = 0.007) and pertussis (p = 0.020) were frequent among girls. Hospitalizations due to acute pneumonia (p < 0.001), exacerbation of serious viral disease sequelae (p < 0.001) and pertussis (p < 0.001) were more frequent among infants. Hospitalizations due to acute pneumonia (p < 0.001) and pertussis (p = 0.015) were more frequent during the autumn-winter period. CONCLUSION: The causes of hospitalization were dominated by asthmatic exacerbations and acute bronchiolitis, which were more frequent among boys. Respiratory infections, such as acute pneumonitis and pertussis, were more frequent during the autumn-winter period and mainly affected the infants. |
