Whether and how sex impinges on neuronal plasticity is poorly understood. Here we show that the C. elegans sex-shared GABAergic DVB neuron displays experience-dependent and sexually dimorphic morphologic plasticity, characterized by the stochastic and dynamic addition of multiple neurites in adult males. These added neurites enable synaptic rewiring of the DVB neuron, instructing a functional switch of the neuron and directly modifying a step of male mating behavior, both of which are altered by experience and post-synaptic activity manipulations. We show that the outgrowth of DVB neurites is promoted by presynaptic NRX-1/neurexin and restricted by postsynaptic NLG-1/neuroligin, providing a novel context in which these two molecules operate. |
