description In this report, the isolation and rheological characterization of cellulose nanofibrils from coir (CNFs-1) were studied and compared with the CNFs from wood (CNFs-2) and cotton (CNFs-3). Cellulose nanofibrils were isolated successfully from coir fibers by chemical treatments followed by ultrasonic fibrillation. During ultrasonic processing, the size and the crystal structure of the CNFs were influenced by the raw materials. In comparison to CNFs-2 and CNFs-3, CNFs-1 from coir fibers presented diverse advantages, such as sufficient fibrillation with a low diameter distribution, in the range of 2–4 nm and high crystallinity. In the dynamic rheology study of CNFs-1, elastic behavior was observed and maintained due to the formation of gel-like steady network structures, which could not be easily deconstructured by frequency shearing and temperature changing. All results indicated that coir fibers could be used as a valuable resource for the preparation of CNFs, which exhibited comparable properties with those isolated from wood, in regard to morphology and rheological properties. This work provides a basis for further advanced applications using the CNFs isolated from coir fibers.
