Sumario:AIM: To describe and interpret how older adults who have returned home to recover from a hip fracture cope with life in a health promoting perspective. DESIGN: Data were collected through the search in seven electronic databases during 2014. Inclusion criteria were peer reviewed, empirical studies. The keywords were hip fracture, coping, empowerment, self‐efficacy, elderly, frail elderly, oldest old. Seventeen papers published 1991–2014 were eligible for inclusion. Analysis of the qualitative and quantitative papers was conducted separately guided by the key words coping, empowerment and self‐efficacy. Due to diversity of studies, a meta‐analysis was not performed. The findings were reported in a narrative synthesis. RESULTS: Recovery is an individual process of regaining health. It is important to include the person's resources and own goals in life. Physical training must be combined with psychosocial interventions to promote personal engagement and health.
