Sumario:Why do so many countries have a mental health act? What is it about mental disorders which warrants that people who suffer from them be subject to different laws from the rest of society? The issues of stigma and discrimination against people with a mental disorder have moved up the agenda in many parts of the world. So why persist with a legal framework for the non-consensual medical treatment of those who are mentally ill which is different from that for those who are physically ill?
