Sumario:Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death in both developed and developing countries. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are derived from hematopoietic stem cells with powerful function of angiogenesis. There are many studies on the relation between coronary heart disease and circulating EPCs. In this review, we discuss biological characteristics of endothelial progenitor cells, some influencing factors of the number and function of EPCs, and the role of EPCs in the treatment of cardiovascular disease. At last, we bring some perspectives on the future of endothelial progenitor cell therapy.
