Sumario:Nowadays, the initial training of nurses and midwives in Morocco represents a turning point. Faced with the multiple actors involved in this training and the proliferation of training institutions, the quality of the offered training should decide the attractiveness of these institutions. The quality of training depends on the training approaches adopted by the institutions. In fact, an approach that promotes skills development and building and is learner-centred would add more value to the institution at the expense of traditional content and transmission-centred approaches. The purpose of this article is to present the competency-based approach in a simple way and to demystify the concept of competence in order to encourage its use in training nurses and midwives within the training institutions of the Ministry of Health that, so far, continue to operate according to the objective approach. After an attempt to demystify the definition of the concept of competence, the article highlights the characteristics of the teaching according to the competency-based approach and proposes some tools of teaching, learning and skills assessment.
