Sumario: | Infection plays a significant role in the morbidity and mortality of the elderly. One population in which infection has not been adequately studied is the elderly asthmatic. This article examines the problems of lower respiratory tract infections in elderly asthmatics in the context of their host defenses, the severity of infection, and their risk of infection with specific organisms. The role of infection in the pathogenesis of asthma and consideration of prophylaxis and therapy are presented. |
