Sumario:HMGB1 (High Mobility group box 1) protein was originally identified as a DNA-binding protein that functions as a structural co-factor. Recent works demonstrated that HMGB1 can be released outside the cell, upon immune activation or primary cell necrosis. In the extracellular space, HMGB1 acts as a potent soluble factor that coordinates cellular events that are crucial for the amplification of inflammation, establishment of early immune responses and tissue repair. However, extracellular HMGB1 also acts as a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine that contributes to the pathogenesis of diverse inflammatory and infectious disorders.
