description A single crystal of Ba(0.9)Ce(0.1)LuAl(0.2)Si(3.8)N(6.9)O(0.1) (barium cerium lutetium aluminosilicate nitride oxide) was obtained by heating a mixed powder of Ba(3)N(2), Si(3)N(4), Al, Lu(2)O(3), and CeO(2) at 2173 K for 1 h under N(2) gas at 0.85 MPa. X-ray single-crystal structure analysis revealed that the title oxynitride is hexa­gonal (lattice constants: a = 6.0378 (5) Å, c = 9.8133 (9) Å; space group: P6(3) mc) and isostructural with BaYbSi(4)N(7). (Ba,Ce) and Lu atoms occupy twelvefold and sixfold coordination sites, respectively.
