Pulmonary Thromboembolism: A Rare Vascular Complication of Amebic Liver Abscess

Amebic liver abscess (ALA) is the most common extra-intestinal manifestation of amebiasis. Its complications include rupture into peritoneum, pleural space or anterior abdominal wall. Large abscesses can cause compression of neighboring vascular structures with thrombus formation. Herein, we are pre...

description Amebic liver abscess (ALA) is the most common extra-intestinal manifestation of amebiasis. Its complications include rupture into peritoneum, pleural space or anterior abdominal wall. Large abscesses can cause compression of neighboring vascular structures with thrombus formation. Herein, we are presenting an unusual case of a 26-year-old male patient who presented with fever, abdominal pain, chest pain and dyspnea. Ultrasound of the abdomen revealed a lesion in the right lobe of liver and chest radiograph revealed minimal right-sided pleural effusion. A computed tomographic (CT) scan was done in view of unexplained symptoms and a diagnosis of ALA compressing the inferior vena cava (IVC) with subsequent thrombus formation and pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) was made. He was managed successfully with antibiotics, percutaneous aspiration and anticoagulation.
