Sumario:Wernicke’s encephalopathy is a neurological complication of clinically manifest deficiencies in thiamine. The occurrence of thiamine deficiencies is a relevant cause of acute and subacute delirium and has devastating long-term effects. In this case presentation, we report on a 49-year-old man who was admitted for inpatient treatment at the university clinic Tulln, in order to undergo medically assisted physical alcohol withdrawal and psychiatric treatment. Furthermore, we discuss standards in the treatment of Wernicke’s encephalopathy, discrepancies in guidelines and practical tips.
