description OBJECTIVE: To present radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of parathyroid adenomas as a safe and effective management strategy for primary hyperparathyroidism in patients who are not eligible for surgery or those who do not want surgery. METHODS: The diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism was confirmed by laboratory investigations. A bone density scan showed osteoporosis, which was an indication for the surgical treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism. Ultrasonography of the neck was done to localize the parathyroid adenoma, after which RFA was performed to shrink the adenoma. Laboratory investigations were performed 10 days, 6 months, and 12 months after the procedure. A literature review was also conducted, and other reports of primary hyperparathyroidism cases treated with RFA were identified. RESULTS: Biochemical cure of primary hyperparathyroidism was achieved by normalization of calcium levels, resolution of symptoms, elimination of complications, and decrease in the volume of the parathyroid adenoma. CONCLUSION: RFA of parathyroid adenomas is a viable alternative to parathyroidectomy in patients who do not meet the criteria for surgery or do not wish to undergo surgery.
