Sumario: | In this article, the authors provide a synthetic overview on COVID-19 epidemiology. This disease has been the cause of a worldwide pandemic since it appeared in December 2019. The article sets out to discuss the case of elderly people, more particularly affected because age over 65 and comorbidities are known to be risk factors for developing a severe illness. In France, elderly people account for 90% of COVID deaths. This article also focuses more particularly on the situation in Strasbourg university hospital geriatrics department. During the first epidemic wave, mortality was 35% in short-term geriatric department and 25% in long-term facilities. After 100,000 deaths in France, hopes are high that we have the epidemic under control thanks to the vaccination strategy. |
