description Central venous catheter (CVC) placement is a commonly performed procedure. More than 5 million CVC placements are performed annually in the United States, with nearly 45% of critical care patients and 8% of all inpatients requiring a CVC during their hospitalization. A novel wire-guided scalpel (GuideBlade; Ambitus Medical Supplies LLC, Oceanside, NY, USA) has recently been introduced into clinical practice. In this communication, we will describe how to use the device and discuss possible advantages associated with its routine use during CVC placement.
