Sumario:The prevention of infectious diseases is of particular importance in multiple sclerosis (MS), as infective episodes may trigger relapses and significantly deteriorate the course of the disease. This was made clear to us in the context of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, where severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection was identified as a trigger of particularly severe and prolonged relapses and clinical deterioration. It is therefore even more important to understand the influence of the immunotherapies approved for MS on a possible susceptibility to a SARS-CoV‑2 infection, the course of the COVID-19 disease, and the vaccination response. In this review article, these points are examined with special consideration of cladribine tablets, an immune reconstitution therapy approved for highly active courses of MS.
