description As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the availability of addictive substances has changed, and with it consumption patterns. The question of whether these observed initial effects will persist and lead to a sustainable change in consumption patterns cannot be answered at present. Adaptations necessary in the addiction support system, such as the implementation of new technologies in the treatment of addicted individuals, for example eHealth and video telephony applications, are very likely to persist beyond the crisis. In addition to proven, medication-based treatment options, such as the use of anti-craving substances for relapse prevention, new methods, such as the use of virtual reality applications in group and individual procedures, are currently being tested.
