High-Flow Nasal Oxygenation and Its Applicability in COVID Patients
High-flow nasal oxygenation (HFNO) is a type of oxygen therapy that provides humidified and heated oxygen through a nasal cannula at much higher flow rates than standard oxygen therapy, while also allowing control over the fraction of inspired oxygen (FIO(2)). Compared to standard oxygen therapy, it...

description | High-flow nasal oxygenation (HFNO) is a type of oxygen therapy that provides humidified and heated oxygen through a nasal cannula at much higher flow rates than standard oxygen therapy, while also allowing control over the fraction of inspired oxygen (FIO(2)). Compared to standard oxygen therapy, it is much more comfortable for the patient and seems to alleviate most of the problems associated with standard oxygen therapy, such as dry nose, dry throat and nasal pain. It also provides a variety of benefits that can reduce the incidence of escalating treatment and initiating mechanical ventilation in COVID patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF). This article provides an overview of HFNO and its current applications in COVID patients during the pandemic. |
