description The hydrodynamic and power characteristics of curved Rushton impeller in an air-wastewater system were investigated using the CFD-PBM method. Studies were conducted primarily in a mixing vessel of diameter 0.39 m. The inference of operating conditions, sparger distribution, and numbers on bulk flow patterns, gas-filled cavity formation, and power consumption have been investigated in detail. It found that the gassed power consumption is closely related to cavity shape and flow patterns. In particular, the development of large cavities causes a significant reduction in power drawn, impeller pumping capacity, and gas dispersion capability. The sparger distribution and location have a strong influence on relative power drawn, power required to disperse gas, and stability of operation. Of the sparger configurations studied, the use of three sparger distributions is suggested, since relative power drawn, gas dispersion capability, and flow patterns in dispersing gas are all enhanced.
